Vol. 263 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Works Councils in Industry.

130.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of enterprises which have works councils or other systematic forms of joint consultation.

While precise information concerning the number of enterprises which have works councils is not available to me, I am aware that works councils, of one type or another, exist in a substantial number of firms. In addition, approximately 110,000 workers in industry come within the scope of joint industrial councils.

131.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will indicate those Western European countries which have legislated for (a) the establishment of works councils in industrial enterprises and (b) the representation of employees on the boards of industrial enterprises.

With regard to (a) of the Deputy's question, the following countries have legislated for the establishment of works councils in industrial enterprises: Austria, Belgium, The Federal Republic of Germany, France, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway and Spain.

I understand that provision has been made either by legislation or collective agreement for the representation of workers on the boards of companies which meet certain requirements in the following countries: Austria, Federal Republic of Germany, Norway and Spain.
