Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Redundancy Statistics

135.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will give particulars of the total number of redundancies in each of the past five years; and if he will indicate the proportion of such redundancies which occurred in enterprises which had been subject to mergers or takeovers.

Particulars of redundancies notified to my Department each year under the Redundancy Payments Acts, 1967 and 1971 are given in a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to have circulated with the Official Report. The statement covers the period since the 1st January, 1968, when the 1967 Act came into operation.

The records maintained in my Department of redundancies under the Act would not enable me to answer the second part of the Deputy's question.

Following is the statement:

Redundancies notified under the Redundancy Payments Acts in the years 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971 and in the first nine months of 1972

NOTE: In the year 1971 certain changes took place in the basis of establishing eligibility for redundancy payments. As from 3rd May, 1971, the income limit for compulsory insurability under the Social Welfare Acts of non manual workers was raised from £1,200 to £1,600 per annum. As from 1st September, 1971, (a) the period of continuous service the same employer to qualify for redundancy payments was reduced from four to two years, and (b) the period of cover after ceasing to pay redundancy contributions was extended from two to four years. The figures for 1971 and 1972 are, therefore, not fully comparable with those for earlier years.
