Vol. 263 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - PAYE Tax System.

151.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that thousands of lower paid workers, particularly those employed away from home, are experiencing increasing financial difficulty due to the PAYE system of tax; and if he will take the necessary steps to grant a tax-free concession to these people.

Alteration of the amounts of the personal allowances and reliefs for income tax purposes are budgetary matters to be considered at the appropriate time and it will be appreciated that I cannot, at this stage, give any indication of what proposals the next budget may or may not contain. The Deputy will recall, however, that increases in the personal allowances were provided for in the last budget at a cost of £13 million for a full year.
