Vol. 263 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Orthopaedic Facilities.

26.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the lack of full facilities for orthopaedic surgery in this country; and, if so, if he will state the steps he intends taking to rectify this situation.

I am advised that adequate facilities for orthopaedic surgery are available in this country.

Is the Minister aware that there is a waiting list of three to four months for patients to be admitted to the Cherry Orchard Hospital. When an application for admission is made the patient receives a letter stating that they have not the facilities and that they are sorry they must keep people waiting. They hope that the State will help to provide better facilities.

With regard to the number of beds available, we consider they are sufficient having regard to the Fitzgerald Report whose conclusions in general have proved accurate in respect of this matter. Urgent cases are taken almost immediately. If the Deputy knows of any cases which he would regard as urgent, I should be glad if he would communicate with me and I shall inform the board concerned.
