Vol. 263 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Aer Lingus Financial Position.

96.

Mr. O'Donnell

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will make a statement indicating the present financial and operating position of Aer Lingus; and whether the Government have any plans to assist the airline to overcome its present difficulties.

I have been informed by the air companies that their operations are suffering severely, mainly because of the drop in tourist traffic, which is a direct result of the Northern Ireland situation, the inadequate fare level on the North Atlantic, and the high rate of inflation at home and abroad. For the six months ended 31st September, 1972, the air companies traffic was down by 9 per cent on the corresponding period last year.

The air companies are taking all possible steps to minimise the impact of these difficulties. They have raised with me the questions of a rebate in landing fees for domestic flights and war risk insurance premiums, which would afford considerable relief to the companies, and I am having these matters examined.
