Vol. 263 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Physiotherapist Shortage.

26.

asked the Minister for Health with regard to the serious shortage of trained physiotherapists, particularly in rural areas, if his Department have any plans for seeking ways whereby qualified physiotherapists might be persuaded to remain in this country rather than work abroad.

I am acutely aware of this problem and am endeavouring to remedy it. Measures taken so far to improve the situation include the creation of senior posts, where the numbers employed warrant it, in the health board service, and the employment in a temporary capacity of married physiotherapists at rates above the minimum of the scale of permanent posts.
