Vol. 263 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Service Pensioners.

75.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will ensure that the parity of pensions granted to public service pensioners in the last budget will be continued in future years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The future implementation of pensions parity for the public service is at present being examined and I will make a statement in the matter as soon as practicable.

Is the Minister aware that retired State pensioners are very upset about his attitude in this matter? In most European countries the parity of pensions is maintained automatically each year. This is not the case in Ireland. I call on the Minister to make a clear and unequivocal statement in the matter.

The Deputy will be aware that parity in the case of State pensions was introduced for the first time this year. He will also be aware of the fact that there are a number of possible ways of implementing parity in the future. I have indicated that this whole matter is being examined and that I will make a statement on it as soon as practicable.

When can we expect this statement?

As soon as practicable, as I have told the Deputy.

Will it be days, weeks, months or years? I would imagine it will be before the next general election.
