Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Timber Quality.

31.

asked the Minister for Lands if he proposes to take any action to improve the quality and grading of Irish timber; whether a sales problem exists; and, if so, if he will indicate the reason.

The quality and grading of Irish timber are influenced largely by practices and standards applied in the sawmilling industry and the Forest and Wildlife Service has arranged in liaison with the Home Grown Timber Merchants Association to initiate a study of this and other aspects of our timber production.

Difficulty in the organisation of sales arises primarily from the relatively small production of sawlog size timber which is as yet coming from the State forests but some steps are being taken to increase sawlog supplies in the short term. Detailed information on this matter will be made available to the trade as soon as possible.

A full forecast of timber production covering the period up to the year 2,000 has already been issued to all sectors of the timber industry.
