asked the Minister for Education if he will indicate the extent to which audio-visual aids are available in (a) primary schools and (b) secondary schools; and the estimated cost per annum to his Department of such aids in the year for which the most recent statistics are available.

A survey as to the audio-visual equipment available in post primary schools was carried out by my Department in 1970. Extracts from the report of the survey are being made available with the Official Report.

No similar information is available in respect of primary schools.

The expenditure by my Department on the provision of such aids during the financial year 1971-72 was as follows:

Secondary schools: £25,500.

National schools: £17,422.

Audio visual equipment in post primary schools—1970

A statistical survey of audio visual equipment in post primary schools was carried out in 1970. Questionnaires were sent to all such schools in the state, 882 in all. Of those schools 688 (78%) returned completed forms.
