Vol. 263 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Choice of Doctor Scheme.

6.

asked the Minister for Health the estimated cost of the choice of doctor scheme for the first full year since its inception; if the cost will exceed the original estimate approved by his Department and, if so, by how much; and if he will indicate the factors which have contributed to any excessive cost.

Before the scheme commenced it was estimated that its total cost in a full year of operation would be £7,850,000. As the Deputy is aware it has been in operation in areas outside the Eastern Health Board only since 1st October and the claims from participating doctors and pharmacists in respect of the first month of its operation in these areas are now being processed. I would suggest that the Deputy repeat his question in four or five weeks' time when I would expect to be in a position to give him a closer estimate of the likely cost of the scheme.
