Vol. 263 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Creamery Industry.

131.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the steps he proposes taking to put the creamery industry on a sound economic footing in view of the keen competition when this country enters the EEC.

I do not accept the implication that the creamery industry is not on a sound economic footing. The prices now being received by Irish milk producers are at record levels, the creamery milk intake this year will be by far the highest ever, and a greater volume and range of processed dairy products are being turned out by an increased number of processing plants. The achievement of this satisfactory position has been greatly helped by the restructuring of the creamery milk price support arrangements which I effected last December and by the encouragement that I have given, and continue to give, to creamery rationalisation and to the expansion of milk processing facilities.
