Vol. 263 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - An Bord Gráin.

150.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the powers, status and method of appointment of An Bord Gráin in EEC conditions.

This will depend on the arrangements which it will be decided to make here next year for such matters as possible intervention in the grain market, denaturing of wheat for animal feed, et cetera. I cannot be specific in the matter at this stage.

Can the Minister state how the method of appointment of An Bord Gráin could be affected by the factors referred to in his reply? Is it not the case that such boards, according to EEC regulations, are supposed to be farmer-representative and not appointed by the Minister?

Whether any change in the constitution of future grain boards will be necessary is a matter that is only now being examined. I am not able to give the Deputy that information.

We are able to have information about the future status of boards such as An Bord Bainne but we are not able to have information, even at this late stage, about An Bord Gráin.

I do not see in what way the present arrangements governing An Bord Gráin would come in conflict with EEC rules. This matter may have to be explored in Brussels with the Commission and if there are certain deficiencies in our present arrangements they can be rectified.

Can the Minister state when he will have this information?

I cannot say at this stage.
