Vol. 263 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Legislators' Income Tax Deductions.

15.

asked the Minister for Finance the total amount deducted by way of income tax from the salaries paid in respect of membership of the Houses of the Oireachtas, including Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries.

It would be contrary to secrecy obligations in relation to the taxation affairs of taxpayers to disclose any information based on the liability to tax of a limited group of individuals. For that reason, I regret I cannot supply the information requested by the Deputy.

In any event the tax deductible from Oireachtas allowances in individual cases depends on the allocation of the income tax personal allowances as between the Oireachtas allowance and any other income which the Deputy or Senator may have. Since this allocation is to an extent arbitrary, any figures relating to tax deducted from Oireachtas allowances might be misleading.

I take it that Deputies, Parliamentary Secretaries and Ministers do pay income tax on their salaries?

They certainly do.
