Vol. 263 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Non-Denominational Education.

52.

asked the Minister for Education whether in preparation for the ultimate unity of the Irish people he will investigate the possibility of introducing a system of optional non-denominational education in primary schools in selected areas.

I do not accept the premise on which the Deputy's question is based.

Could the Minister answer the question, even if he does not accept the premise?

I have said I do not accept the premise, so obviously I do not propose to act as suggested in the question.

There might be other reasons why the Minister will not answer it.

53.

asked the Minister for Education the total number of schools in the Republic which are (a) non-denominational, (b) inter-denominational and (c) denominational.

The information available to my Department does not enable it to make a classification of schools under the headings in the Deputy's question.

The Minister cannot know much.
