Vol. 263 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Teaching Resources.

66.

asked the Minister for Education whether it is intended that pre-clinical medical teaching should continue in both University College, Dublin and Trinity College, Dublin; and, if so, with what hospitals such teaching shall be associated.

67.

asked the Minister for Education if he will indicate (a) the proposed allocation of teaching resources as between Trinity College, Dublin and University College Dublin; (b) the number of faculties which will be duplicated as between the two university colleges; and (c) the faculties in which teaching will continue in one rather than the other college.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 66 and 67 together.

These matters will form part of the overall consideration of the Higher Education Authority's report on university re-organisation in connection with which recommendations will be made to the Government in due course.

Is the report not available?

The report is available and I have asked various interests concerned to furnish me with their views.

How long does the Minister think it will take?

I have suggested the end of November but I have been requested by some of the bodies concerned to extend the time.

Would the Minister have some idea? Has it been extended very considerably?

Well, pretty considerably.

So anything may not be finalised this year?

I cannot say what the position will be. I am awaiting the comments of the various groups.

Does the Minister think that matters arising from the report of the Higher Education Authority demand urgent action?

If I were to take urgent action on them I would be criticised, as I have been previously, for lack of consultation. When I decide that I will have consultation I am criticised for not acting more speedily.

Would the Minister not make a decision on a time limit?

I did place a time limit on receiving views from the various groupings but I cannot hold them to it.

Question No. 68.

Does the Minister intend to produce a White Paper on the future of university education and will he allow time in this House to discuss the Government's intentions in relation to the universities?

I will consider the issue of a White Paper in relation to higher education.
