Vol. 263 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Leitrim School.

79.

asked the Minister for Education if he will sanction the extension of classrooms at Drumkeerin technical school, County Leitrim in view of the fact that this school is overcrowded with an enrolment of over 180 students and that Leitrim Vocational Education Committee were forced to rent a vacant house in Drumkeerin village due to lack of accommodation in the school.

My Department considered that the accommodation available was sufficient for the courses authorised in this school. An appeal by the County Leitrim Vocational Education Committee for reconsideration of the matter is at present being examined.

Is the Minister aware that there are 180 pupils in this school and that there is great lack of accommodation? We have been informed that no extension work will be carried out and that no prefabs can be erected, despite the fact that the teachers are very severely handicapped with 180 pupils in a school which is doing very good work in a small village?

So far as the Department are concerned, as I pointed out to the Deputy, they believe there is sufficient accommodation available. However, an appeal has been sent in by the County Leitrim Vocational Education Committee and this is being examined.
