Vol. 263 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sub-standard Schools.

92.

asked the Minister for Education if he will introduce a crash programme of replacement of sub-standard schools in this country; if a survey of such schools has been undertaken; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

An extensive examination of school accommodation has been carried out over the past five years. A considerable amount of replacement of unsuitable accommodation has already taken place as part of a programme for the rationalisation and improvement of facilities generally and this programme is continuing.

The replacement, renovation or extension of schools has been proceeding at an accelerated rate over the past decade. This has resulted in a position where such facilities as running water and flushed sanitation have been installed in a very high percentage of the schools and where unsuitable schools are being replaced at a much increased rate.

It is proposed to continue the school building programme in an orderly fashion until every unsuitable school is replaced.
