Vol. 263 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of School Books.

111.

asked the Minister for Education the action he proposes taking with regard to the high cost of school books which imposes a financial burden on parents and students.

The book publishers have been asked by my Department to keep the costs of school texts at the lowest possible price. A number of the prescribed texts are repeated annually or within a three or four year cycle in an endeavour to reduce costs to individual families. In addition, my Department subsidise the publication of certain textbooks, for example publications in Irish with a restricted sale, to enable them to be sold at relatively low cost.

Grants are made available by my Department to enable free books and accessories to be supplied to necessitous pupils.
