Vol. 263 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Land Grants.

26.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that grants have been made available in the past from EEC funds for land consolidation and for forestry purposes in member countries under regulation 17/64/ EEC; and if he has taken any steps to encourage such applications for 1973.

I am aware of the terms of this regulation. The possibility of assistance from EEC funds for land structural purposes under this regulation is being examined in conjunction with the Directives on Modernisation of Farms and Encouragement to leave farming.

As far as afforestation is concerned it seems unlikely that applications that might be forthcoming from any individual or group would satisfy the conditions laid down on the criteria currently applied in regard to disbursements from the fund. Nevertheless the attention of those who might be concerned particularly the Landowners' Convention has been drawn to the existence of the scheme.

Could the Minister tell me if he is aware that, if it is desired to obtain funds for 1973, applications must be sent in before 1st June, 1973? Could he state if he has yet obtained any applications which he could process here and have in by 1st January to obtain funds for 1973, applications of other countries?

There is a further meeting in Brussels next week between my officials and the people there, and we hope to get the position clarified or advanced. Perhaps the Deputy would like to put down a further question in, say, two weeks' time and I might have something useful to report.

Could the Minister tell me if he has communicated the terms of this directive to the farming organisations to encourage them to give consideration to the possibility also?

If I have circulated them?

I am not aware that I have.

Would the Minister consider doing it?

It probably has been done, but if it has not I shall see that it is done.
