Vol. 263 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bord na Móna Redundancies.

4.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the number of Bord na Móna employees (a) pensionable and (b) non-pensionable who have recently become redundant at Kilberry, County Kildare; the amount of compensation offered to the redundant employees and the likely date on which alternative employment will be made available at the proposed new works near Monasterevan; and if he will have consultations with the board with a view to providing any necessary capital funds to expedite the provision of alternative employment for these redundant employees.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that of a total of 25 men laid off at Kilberry, four are pensionable and 21 are non-pensionable. The period of permanent service varied between just over two years in one case to between three and a half to four years in the other cases. I understand that compensation has been paid as provided for by the Redundancy Payments Acts.

The board have also informed me that there is no possibility of absorbing the men on the small area of bog being acquired near Monasterevan. Plans in regard to this bog are not restricted in any way by shortage of capital.
