Vol. 263 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kidney Disease Research.

8.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state the annual amount of money spent each year on research into kidney disease in this country; the amount given by his Department by way of a research grant; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Research into kidney disease is one of the many research activities assisted by grants provided by the Medical Research Council, who are financed mainly from the Hospitals Trust Fund. It is a matter for the Medical Research Council to decide how the total grant available to them should be allocated, including therefore how much should be spent on research into kidney disease as distinct from other forms of medical research. However, I am informed that the council gave grants totalling £5,500 in the current year towards research into kidney disease. Research on this subject proceeding in hospitals or other institutions is financed from other sources also but I have no information on the amounts expended in these cases.
