Vol. 263 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Deserted Wives' Allowance.

22.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware that the deserted wives' allowance is payable only to those over 50 years of age; and if he will take steps to provide payment in all cases of desertion irrespective of the wife's age.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, there is no lower age limit for the deserted wife's allowance in the case of a wife who has a dependent child. The age limit in the case of the wife who has no dependent child was reduced from 50 to 40 years with effect from 3rd August last. A further reduction in this age limit is not at present contemplated.
