Vol. 263 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Michael Collins Commemoration.

155.

asked the Minister for Defence the extent of the participation of the Army and the FCA to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of General Michael Collins.

As the Deputy is aware, the Taoiseach, in replying to a question on 30th May, 1972, referred to the well-established practice of setting aside a special day each year to honour all those who took part in the struggle for Independence and stated that, in the very special circumstances of this year, being the 50th anniversary of the commencement of the Civil War, the Government had agreed that the Defence Forces would be represented at the Béal na Bláth ceremonies in August to commemorate the death of Michael Collins 50 years ago. He added that it was intended that the Defence Forces would also be represented at another commemorative ceremony of a similar nature during the year.

A military ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Michael Collins took place at Béal na Bláth on 20th August, 1972. A special guard of honour and an Army band participated in the ceremony and a wreath was laid by me. An Fórsa Cosanta Aitiúil were not involved.

Is it intended to participate next year?

Not Yet.

The generosity will be an annual thing.
