Vol. 263 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Retention of Army Rank.

159.

asked the Minister for Defence if an NCO who leaves the Army on pre-discharge leave and while on leave decides to remain on in the Army is entitled to retain his rank.

A non-commissioned officer who has been granted special leave with pay and allowances prior to his discharge from the Permanent Defence Force or transfer to the Reserve Defence Force and who is permitted, before the expiration of such leave, to extend his service in the Permanent Defence Force, is normally allowed to retain his rank. He may, however, be reduced to a lower rank by direction of the Adjutant General.

In this connection Defence Force Regulations provide that a non-commissioned officer may be reduced to a lower rank by direction of the Adjutant General when it is shown to his satisfaction that the retention of such non-commissioned officer in the higher rank would be prejudicial to the best interests of the service.
