asked the Minister for Defence whether he proposes building a new Army barracks in the Dublin area; if he will make a statement in regard to the state of repair and conditions at Collins Barracks, McKee Barracks, Clancy Barracks, Griffith Barracks and Cathal Brugha Barracks; if he will indicate with regard to Collins Barracks the amount spent on maintenance during the past three years; and the plans the Government have to ensure better buildings and facilities for Army personnel.

As I indicated in my reply to Question No. 84 on the 18th May, 1972, the work involved in planning a new military barracks is proceeding. It is not anticipated, however, that the new barracks will be sited in the Dublin area.
Having regard to the age of the buildings, the barracks named have been maintained in fairly good condition and provide reasonably suitable accommodation. The main blocks in Griffith Barracks have not been used for military purposes in recent years.
The amount spent on the maintenance of Collins Barracks, Dublin, over the past three years is estimated at approximately £100,000. The Estimate for Defence for the current financial year includes a special allocation of £1 million for miscellaneous works to improve various aspects of Army accommodation throughout the country and for Civil Defence buildings.
Could the Minister say where the proposed new barracks are likely to be sited?
This is being considered by the committee set up to report and make proposals on the erection of new barracks.

Members of the Department of Defence.
Are any Army personnel involved?
Yes.
The Minister indicated in his reply that plans are being drawn up, but surely these plans cannot be drawn unless the site or at least a locality has been selected as the plans will have to be drawn with an eye to the environment in which the barracks will be placed?
We have a good idea of the area but it would be a bit soon to name it just yet.
Is it in the midlands?
No.
If it is on the east coast near Dublin, what will happen to the present barracks in Dublin city?
I am sure they will be in good demand. Dublin city needed the accommodation and needs the area which the present barracks occupy. I should be very pleased to make that area available to the city of Dublin.
Is the Minister now saying that on a matter of such tremendous importance as that of these military barracks situated in Dublin city, a decision is being made to sell them off?
It is too early to indicate yet——
