Vol. 263 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Trade Description.

107.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if it is proposed to change the existing trade description on articles and products manufactured in the Republic to Made in EEC; and if he will make a statement on this matter.

I presume the Deputy has in mind goods manufactured in Ireland and exported to EEC countries. These goods would have to comply with the laws of the importing country. There is no indication that any of the member countries proposes to change its existing law so as to require goods to be marked "made in EEC".

Is the Minister aware that the directive referred to in Question No. 102 would require that if countries are to get EEC approved standards they will have to reach certain standards? This may be what Deputy Flanagan has in mind. In order to export with the approved EEC mark, firms would have to reach certain standards in regard to certain products.

We may have certain standards.

There will be a specific EEC mark which can be put on products which have reached the standards laid down by the EEC.

That can be slightly different—a standard marketing as apart from a compulsory marking.
