Vol. 263 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Garda Síochána Applicant.

123.

asked the Minister for Justice why a person (name supplied) was not considered suitable to take part in the recent examination for the Garda Síochána.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply which issued from my office on 17th October to representations which he made on behalf of the person in question. The reply stated that "it is the function of the Commissioner to assess whether candidates are suitable for membership of the Garda Síochána. The Commissioner was not satisfied of this in this case and, as the matter is the responsibility of the Commissioner alone, the Minister regrets that he cannot be of assistance in this instance".

I do not wish to add anything to that reply except that it has never been the Commissioner's practice to give reasons for his decision in cases of this kind and that I am not involved in any way in the decision-making process.
