Vol. 263 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pension Bonus Payment.

31.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if his attention has been drawn to a newspaper report (details supplied) of a statement by the British Prime Minister that he intended to introduce legislation for the immediate payment of £10 "freeze bonus" to old age pensioners and others in Britain; if he will make arrangements for the payment of a similar bonus in this country to all old age pensioners and widows and to have it paid before Christmas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Pension rates were substantially increased on a permanent basis from last August for non-contributory pensioners and from October for contributory pensioners under the provisions of the Social Welfare Act, 1972. It is not proposed to introduce legislation for the purpose of making a special isolated payment.
