Vol. 263 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Career Guidance Schemes.

54.

asked the Minister for Education the number of schools in the Dublin area providing career guidance schemes for their pupils.

Pupil guidance is at present being provided in 64 post-primary schools in the Dublin area.

What proportion of post-primary schools does this figure represent?

Approximately one-third.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that there is great need for an extension of the services and can he indicate what the plans are in this respect?

The Deputy will be aware that the Minister has made special provision for the employment of career guidance teachers particularly in schools where there are more than 250 pupils on the roll books. He has allowed that a guidance teacher in a school of more than 250 would be excluded from the normal pupil/ teacher ratio.

How many requests has the Minister received from schools for these teachers?

I cannot answer that.
