Vol. 263 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unearned Income Classification.

32.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will review the classification as unearned income of the rent of a shop owned by a person (name supplied) in Limerick who is widowed; and, if not, if he will arrange to have the income tax thereon for 1972-73 accepted in quarterly instalments.

As regards the first part of the question, the law does not permit the rent in question to be classified otherwise than as unearned income. As regards the second part, the position is that the assessment in question is under appeal and that a substantial payment on account for 1972-73 has been offered pending settlement of the liability. If the taxpayer wishes to have those arrangements changed she should instruct her agent to get in touch with the inspector of taxes without delay.
