Vol. 263 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

30.

asked the Minister for Education (a) the total number of grants paid in 1971-72 under the Local Authorities (Higher Education Grants) Act, 1968 and (b) the estimated total number for 1972-73, subdivided into grants payable to students in and near university cities and those payable to other students; and the estimated number in 1972-73 in respect of whom the maintenance element in the grant will be less than in 1971-72.

The total number of grants paid in 1971-72 under the Local Authorities (Higher Education Grants) Act, 1968, was 4,333, consisting of 1,166 grants paid to students living in or near a university town and 3,167 grants paid to other students. Estimated total grants for 1972-73 are 5,500 made up of 1,480 grants to students living in or near a university town and 4,020 grants to other students.

Every grant-holder residing away from home will have more maintenance this year than he would have had last year. There are a small number of grant-holders residing at home who have less for maintenance this year than they had last year. In the majority of these cases the amount involved is less than £10.
