Vol. 263 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Urban Road Improvement Grants.

148.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the current heavy cost and the increasing need for road improvements in urban districts because of heavier traffic, he will increase substantially the urban road improvement grants to urban district councils.

149.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will ensure that increased financial assistance will be made available urgently for the improvement and reconstruction of public roads within urban areas which have become inadequate due to increased industrial and commercial activity.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions No. 148 and No. 149 together.

Increased allocations were made from the Road Fund this year for urban road improvements and for traffic management schemes to towns with special traffic problems.

The whole of the expected income of the Road Fund in the current year has been earmarked for these and other categories of road works and no funds are available for supplementary allocations.
