Vol. 263 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Vehicle Weights and Dimensions.

152.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he has under consideration any legislation regarding limits to the lengths and loads of large vehicles as they relate to the width and capacity of Irish roads; and if he will indicate the steps being undertaken to accommodate large carrier vehicles from the continent which will be using Irish roads after 1st January, 1973.

The European Economic Commission have made proposals to harmonise a number of the statutory controls which member states exercise on the weights and dimensions of road vehicles. It is not possible to say at this stage what will be the outcome of the consideration of these proposals. Current indications are that whatever proposals are eventually agreed on will apply from 1st January, 1980. Until such time as the controls exercised by member states of the Community in the matter of vehicle weights and dimensions are harmonised, visiting vehicles will continue to be subject to the existing requirements in this regard laid down in our domestic vehicle regulations.
