Vol. 264 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sheltered Employment.

25.

asked the Minister for Health whether he has under consideration any scheme which would increase the number of openings for employment for disabled persons: and whether his Department has held discussions with private employers on this matter.

I am not conducting any special examination of the feasibility of increasing the number of places available for disabled persons generally in open employment, apart from some special questions which have been raised with my Department in regard to problems affecting the employment of the blind. The National Rehabilitation Board operates a placement service to deal with this problem as it affects the disabled generally. Figures supplied by the board show that very considerable success has been achieved in this field and 1,580 were placed in the two year period 1970-71. If the board were of opinion that any special action by my Department would help to improve attainment still further, I would be prepared to have the matter gone into.

I have a report from the board on the question of further development of sheltered employment and I am having this question examined at present.
