Vol. 264 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Returns for Trial.

4.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of the last 12 months to date the number of occasions on which a return for trial has been made by the Attorney General following a refusal to make a return by a district justice; and if he will state in respect of those cases, if any, (a) the number of convictions obtained (b) the number of acquittals by direction and (c) the number of acquittals by finding of the jury.

A return for trial was made by the Attorney General in 14 such cases in the last 12 months: convictions were obtained in four of these cases. In no case was there an acquittal by direction. In one case there was an acquittal by finding of a jury.
