Vol. 264 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Factory Safety Committees.

53.

asked the Minister for Labour whether there has been any increase in the number of safety committees operating in factories and work places; and whether any steps to increase the number of such committees are under consideration.

There has been an increase in the number of safety committees operating in factories and work places from 86 in 1966, to 145 in 1971.

The establishment of safety committees is a statutory right given to the workers in the Factories Act, 1955. I have on many occasions drawn attention to the workers' rights in this matter and all possible help and guidance is given by the industrial inspectors and by the National Industrial Safety Organisation. This will continue. A special leaflet dealing with the setting up of safety committees was issued by my Department in co-operation with the National Industrial Safety Organisation.

To whom are copies of the leaflet issued?

They are circularised to all the industries and committees concerned and, indeed, to anybody who asks for them.

Would they be sent as a matter of routine to shop stewards?

I am not sure of that.

Would the Minister find out because there is still ignorance on the part of some people?

They should be issued. I am sure they are, but I will check.

Question No. 54 postponed.
