asked the Taoiseach if he will give the latest available figures on the age of the registered unemployed; and whether these figures indicate an increase or decrease in youth unemployment as against each of the previous three years.

The number of persons on the live register on 17th November, 1972, was 69,886. Of this total 463 were under 18 years of age and 5,128 were aged 65 years and over. These are the only age groups available for the total live register. In September of each year particulars are collected on the age groups of males on the live register who reside in incorporated towns. The following are the numbers returned for 29 September, 1972:

Males under 21 years were 9.9 per cent of all males residing in incorporated towns on the live register in September, 1972. The corresponding figures for the three previous years were: 1971, 10.5 per cent, 1970, 9.6 per cent and 1969, 8.7 per cent.
