Vol. 264 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Redundant Workers.

19.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware that in compliance with the Redundancy Payment Acts whereby an employer is required to give to an employee 14 days' notice in writing of his intention to render the employee redundant, occasions have arisen on which such workers scheduled for redundancy are put on short-time working or alternatively dismissed before the scheduled date of dismissal, thus penalising redundant workers; and if any legislative amendments are proposed to remedy this position.

I am not so aware, but if the Deputy will furnish me with particulars of the cases in question, I shall be glad to investigate these.

20.

asked the Minister for Labour the steps he is taking to find alternative employment for workers who have already become or who are about to become redundant in the fresh meat industry.

Where redundancies have occurred in the fresh meat industry the National Manpower Service, as part of its normal service to redundant workers, has interviewed the workers concerned and helped many of them to get alternative employment. The same service will be available to any further workers who become redundant in the industry.

Can the Minister give us the percentage of those reemployed in other industries?

From the meat industry?

The Deputy would need to put down a separate question.

That is a separate question.

I thought the Minister would be aware——

The Deputy did not ask for that information.

I gave the total figure yesterday. I have not got it in relation to the meat industry separately. We employed the whole lot of the people down there.

You employed none of them down there unfortunately.
