Vol. 264 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

47.

asked the Minister for Education whether he has under consideration the recognition of practical subjects at leaving certificate level for higher education grants; and whether he favours the recognition of such subjects for matriculation.

The position in relation to the higher education grants scheme is that any subject which is recognised for matriculation purposes is also recognised for the purpose of the scheme. My Department has been pursuing with the university authorities the question of extending the range of matriculation subjects. I have expressed publicly my views on the matter on several occasions.

Could the Minister indicate when he expects to receive a decision from the universities in this matter?

I am afraid not. That is a matter for the university authorities.

Does the Minister have any hope of any positive response from the universities on this important matter?

I have not. I did make representations to the universities in relation to other subjects some time ago to accept certain subjects as matriculation subjects and they have done that but I cannot anticipate what they are likely to do in relation to this.
