asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the steps taken to preserve and expand the stock of pigs in the country.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the steps taken to preserve and expand the stock of cattle in the country.

49.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the population of sheep in Ireland in the June census in 1950, 1960, 1970 and 1972; and the steps taken to preserve and expand the stock of sheep in the country.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 47 to 49 together.

The sheep population was as follows in the years to which the Deputy refers: 1950, 2,384,639; 1960, 4,314,130; 1970, 4,082,300; 1972, 4,276,900.

The steps taken to preserve and expand the stocks of cattle, sheep and pigs in the country are set out in the document. "Main Activities of the Department", which has been circulated to Deputies.
