Vol. 264 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trade Balance with East Germany.

58.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether any consideration has been given to improving this country's trade balance with East Germany which is at present overwhelmingly in favour of East Germany.

In the case of all countries with which Ireland has an adverse trade balance the general aim is to seek to improve the position by encouraging the expansion of exports. The Government, through Córas Tráchtála, have made a wide range of grants, incentives and services available to exporters and these, of course, apply to exports to East Germany.

I am very hopeful that more Irish exporters encouraged by the range of grants and services available will succeed in increasing exports to East Germany shortly.
