Vol. 264 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment Statistics.

1.

asked the Taoiseach the estimated numbers of (a) wage earners (b) salary earners and (c) self-employed in this country, up to the latest available date.

It is estimated that the total number of employees at work in the State in April, 1971 was 751,000 while the number of self-employed or assisting relatives was 320,000. These figures are subject to revision when the results of the 1971 census of population become available. The method of classification used does not distinguish between employees who are salary earners and those who are wage earners, nor is it possible, in the annual estimates, to distinguish between the self-employed and unpaid family workers.

Question No. 2 postponed.
