Vol. 264 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Car Prices.

37.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if car prices will be reduced and, if so, to what extent; if he is aware that reductions of up to 2.4 per cent were publicly announced while increases were announced within 48 hours which appeared to nullify these reductions; and if he will state whether new cars are, in fact, cheaper.

Retail prices of new cars will be reduced as from 1st December, 1972, by about 2¼ per cent on average following agreement between the National Prices Commission and the Society of the Irish Motor Industry.

A Press release and an advertisement issued by my Department on 24th November, 1972, indicated that, on the recommendation of the National Prices Commission, I had raised no objection in the period 1st to 21st November, 1972, to price increases for part of the range of four-makes of motor vehicles to compensate for the increased landed cost of fully built up vehicles or of aggregates for assembly here. The forthcoming price reduction of about 2¼ per cent is independent of these increases and represents an agreed reduction in the margin of profit allowed to dealers.
