Vol. 264 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Aliens Status.

50.

asked the Minister for Justice if there will be any change in the laws defining the status of aliens after this country enters the EEC in January next.

I shall shortly be making an order giving effect, as from 1st January, to this country's obligations towards nationals of the member states of the EEC in regard to entry into and residence in the State.

Pending our entry into the Common Market there is the question of people coming from places such as Italy at the moment. Are there severe restrictions on them even in the period prior to entry?

There are no particular restrictions on people coming from Italy more than from any other country.

They do arise where people come from specialised employment here and permits are not issued to them in time.

Irrespective of what country they come from for employment they must have employment permits before they come here. That is a matter for the Minister for Labour.

Is there any question of giving people of this type, whether they are British or other citizens of the Common Market, the right to vote in general elections?

I do not think it arises out of this question.
