Vol. 264 No. 6

Written Answers. - Postal Voting.

201.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, having regard to the increasing number of citizens residing abroad while engaged on Irish diplomatic missions or in organisations associated with the European Communities and other international organisations, he will introduce legislation to enable such persons to vote by post in general elections, presidential elections and referenda; and, if not, why.

On the recommendation of the all-party joint committee on the electoral law, postal voting is confined to members of the Garda Síochána and the Defence Forces. The extension of postal voting facilities to the categories mentioned by the Deputy would have to be considered in the context of applications for similar facilities made by various other groups.

Amendment of the law in this regard is not proposed.
