Vol. 264 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Industries.

47.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his Department have undertaken any analysis of the number of new industries to be set up in this country in 1973; and the total number of jobs which these industries will provide.

I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that on the basis of projects approved for grants to date they expect 55 projects to commence production in 1973, providing an estimated 5,300 jobs at full production. I understand that an additional eight projects which are at an advanced stage of negotiation are likely to be approved for grants and to commence production in 1973. These eight projects are expected to employ a further 1,100 at full production.

48.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if and when it is proposed to make financial assistance available to the Erris-Achill areas of County Mayo for the provision of industrial projects there.

Industrial projects set up in the area are eligible for grants and other financial incentives administered by Gaeltarra Éireann or the Industrial Development Authority. The Deputy may be assured that any worthwhile project for the area would receive the most favourable consideration.

49.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make arrangements to provide an industry for the town of Millstreet, County Cork, where there is emigration and high unemployment.

I am aware of the need for further industrial development in the town and I understand that the Industrial Development Authority have recently approved grants for two smaller projects there. The authority will continue its efforts to interest industrialists in setting up new industry in the Millstreet area.
