Vol. 264 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Insurance.

51.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has yet received the report of the Insurance Industry Committee on motor vehicle insurance.

I have recently received the interim report of the Insurance Industry Committee on motor insurance and am having it examined in my Department.

52.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce how premiums payable by Irish motorists will be affected by the EEC directive on motor vehicle insurance.

I presume the Deputy is referring to the directive which provides that all motor policies shall include insurance cover for the entire Community area. Arrangements have been made whereby the premiums payable by Irish motorists generally will not be affected by the directive referred to and only those motorists who bring their cars abroad will be required to pay for the extra insurance cover.

53.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when he intends to deal with the unsatisfactory situation that exists in relation to motor insurance.

I have just received the report of the committee which I set up two years ago to carry out an examination of the situation in relation to motor insurance. The report is being examined in my Department at present, and I intend to take my decisions as soon as possible.

Would the Minister tell the House when he might be in a position to make a statement about the motor insurance business? There is great anxiety among people who cannot get insurance at any price, even 150 per cent higher than it should be.

I got the report the week before last. It is a comprehensive report which in its own way is indicative of the volume of investigation and effort which was put into it. It is a very comprehensive document. I hope to be in a position to make a comprehensive statement soon and to publish the report before the end of January.

Is there any recommendation that the industry should be nationalised?

I do not think it would be proper for me to comment at this stage on what is in the report.

That must be the main recommendation.
