Vol. 264 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Overcharging Prosecutions.

57.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of prosecutions brought against retailers for overcharging since the introduction of VAT.

Legal proceedings are at present being instituted by my Department in a total of 25 cases for breach of various maximum prices orders which I have made under the Prices Acts. Fifteen of these cases have arisen since the introduction of VAT on 1st November, 1972, but these cases are in no way related to the introduction of that tax.

Where the inspector visits a shop to check prices, if the retailer says the price has been increased by the supplier since the previous visit, is that accepted without a check as to whether or not the price has been so increased?

No. The inspector who calls is up-to-date on price increases by manufacturers or suppliers which have been sanctioned. If there is a price increase by a supplier that has not arisen from a sanction by me that is certainly investigated.
