Vol. 264 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment in Semi-State Organisation.

58.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether his attention has been drawn to an advertisement which appeared in the daily newspapers on 4th September, 1972, inviting applications for clerical positions with a semi-State organisation in the Ballsbridge area from girls with honours leaving certificate; the reason for these posts being confined to girls; and whether this is a method of avoiding equal pay.

I have seen the advertisement to which the Deputy presumably refers. As the Deputy will appreciate the recruitment of staff is a matter of day-to-day administration and is, therefore, entirely a matter for the body concerned. I am informed, however, that the jobs in question are concerned with basic clerical operations similar to work already being done by an existing grade of female staff, and the question of avoiding equal pay does not, therefore, arise.
