As is well known, the Garda Síochána have, as a matter of public policy, been an unarmed force since their establishment. There has been no change in this policy, which has, however, always been subject to an arrangement whereby the Commissioner can authorise the issue of fire-arms to members of the force for the discharge of particular duties or on particular occasions.
